Austin WaterWise xeriscaping and lawn reduction

Trade a thirsty lawn for a landscape that looks better in August than turf ever did, and that qualifies for City of Austin WaterWise rebates while it does it.

Austin xeriscape front yard with agave, salvia, decomposed granite path, and mulched native perennial beds

Xeriscaping and drought-tolerant landscaping in Austin, TX

What you get

A yard that still looks planted and cared for in the second month of a drought, on a fraction of the water and a fraction of the mowing.

The problem

Most Austin lawns were installed with a species that needs more water than the city allows during restrictions. Every summer the same cycle repeats: watering days shrink, the turf browns, and the homeowner pays for sod again in the fall.

How we solve it

We convert the areas that are not being used for play or pets into planted beds, native grasses and permeable surfaces, keep a smaller, healthier lawn where it earns its place, and rebuild the soil underneath so what is left holds water instead of shedding it.

What is included

  • Turf removal and haul-off, including root and rhizome control
  • Native Texas perennial beds: Salvia greggii, Turk's Cap, Autumn Sage, blackfoot daisy
  • Three inches of hardwood mulch over quality bed prep
  • Decomposed granite paths, limestone edging, and boulder accents
  • Rebate-ready documentation for City of Austin WaterWise programs
  • Optional drip conversion for every new planting bed

How the project runs

  1. Step 1

    Design consult

We measure the area, note sun and drainage, and align plant palette with how you actually use the yard.

  2. Step 2

    Rebate check

We size the conversion to hit City of Austin rebate thresholds where the property qualifies.

  3. Step 3

    Install

Turf out, soil prep, plants, mulch, hardscape, and drip, typically in two to four days.

  4. Step 4

    Establishment plan

You get a simple watering schedule for the first season, then the landscape carries itself.

Warning signs your property needs this

  • A water bill that doubles between May and September
  • Turf that goes dormant and patchy every summer regardless of watering
  • Areas of lawn nobody walks on, mowed only because they are there
  • Runoff down the driveway within minutes of the sprinklers starting
  • Bed edges that have crept away and blurred into the grass

Central Texas considerations

  • Austin Water rebates can offset part of a lawn conversion, and we plan projects so the paperwork is straightforward.
  • Watering-day restrictions mean new plantings are scheduled around what is legal to water at establishment.
  • Thin soils over limestone need bed building, not just plant swapping.
  • Deer pressure west of MoPac changes the plant list significantly.

Real projects

Northwest Hills front yard conversion

We replaced 1,800 square feet of struggling St. Augustine with decomposed granite paths, native perennial beds and a small shade-tolerant lawn panel. Irrigation runtime dropped by more than half.

Cedar Park corner lot

A hot, west-facing strip that never held turf became a pollinator bed with a dry creek feature that also fixed the runoff onto the sidewalk.

Common questions

How much does xeriscaping cost per square foot?

Turnkey conversions run about $19.50 to $28.30 per square foot depending on hardscape and plant density.

Are rebates available?

City of Austin WaterWise rebates have historically paid roughly $1.00 to $3.00 per square foot on qualifying conversions.

Is a xeriscape just rocks?

No. Ours are planted landscapes, native perennials and grasses that bloom most of the year on a fraction of the water.
